The history behind Mountcastle Miniature Horses
The Mountcastle lineage traces back to 1778. According to many different sources, William Mountcastle was born in 1778 in England. Maybe? Scotland is a maybe, too. It appears our family story may have some truth to it after all. See, I was told our ancestor came to the states to escape the law. As he was from Scotland, he changed his name to one common in England, which was Mountcastle. I have spent a lot of time looking for records of William's parents, but found nothing. I did find a tie to John Rolfe (Pocahontas) though...
Once he was here in the States, William Mountcastle married Susannah Moore in Virginia in 1804. They had thirteen children! True love? Maybe... Apparently, he was a Cobbler - a boot and shoe maker - in the early 1800s, then owned a plantation.
Their second son, John R., is my ancestor. His son, Robert E. Mountcastle was born in 1835. He was named after his godfather and Grandmother's second cousin, General Robert E. Lee.
Robert E. had a son named Walter. It is Walter's son Paul "Monty" Mountcastle whom this farm is named after. Monty had come from Texas to the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s. He bought a small farmhouse and some land, which is now where I, my family, and the horses call home.
Of course, the "small farmhouse" has changed through the years, but I think Grandpa would approve. Just as I know he'd approve of the barns and fields we've built on his land.
He, too, was an animal enthusiast, and bred prize show dogs. Grandpa Monty's Kerry Blue Terriers carried the Mountcastle name, as the horses now do.
